Advance Review: In a bold attempt to cleanse our palates of one Captain Jack Sparrow, Starz invites you all to experience the down and dirty, gross and grimy world of pirates with Black Sails, created by Jon Steinberg (Human Target, Jericho) and Robert Levine, which debuts Saturday night. (The pilot can be viewed already on YouTube, though with the language and nudity censored.)
This new series, executive produced by Michael Bay, stands on its own quite confidently while also offering up a treat for fans of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - as it's essentially a rugged, violent, cutthroat dramatization of the backstory of that famed novel. So Captain Flint, legendary Captain of the Walrus, is very much alive, and John Silver is neither "Long" nor peg-legged. Unfortunately (as a double-edged scabbard), the pirate world that Stevenson created, which every pirate project since - all the way up to Assassin's Creed 4 - owes its lifeblood to, has become commonplace. The curse of introducing an entire lexicon, way of dress, and code of conduct to the story-telling world is that by the time you get back around to revisiting them, they've become tropes.
