Since Tom Taylor took the reins of Earth 2 late last year, perhaps the biggest question surrounding the series has been the identity of the new Batman. If Superman cheated death at the hands of Darkseid's forces, is it possible Bruce Wayne could as well? Or is this a new heir to the mantle? The series' second annual issue answers all questions as it provides a detailed origin of this new Batman and explores his connections to the old.
Of course, thanks to DC's overly spoilery action figure solicitations, many readers already know this Batman's identity. Taylor does deliver an entertaining issue regardless of whether you know the big twist, albeit one that veers into melodramatic territory at times. At his best, Taylor has a very comfortable, easy way with DC's heroes that translates into fun, engaging adventures. His lighter touch when it comes to elements like dialogue was just what Earth 2 needed. Unfortunately, that element isn't as apparent in this issue. Perhaps the story and the characterization needed a bit more space than the single-issue format could allow. There are certain scenes that could have used more space and breathing room.
