Rise of Incarnates Puts Fresh Spin on Fighting Games

The quick pitch for Rise of Incarnates—Bandai Namco’s


forthcoming fighter/shooting game hybrid— could almost pass for the plot of a summer blockbuster. “It takes place in the near-future on the devastated landscapes of real-world locations, such as New York City,” begins executive producer Ryuichiro Baba. “These various characters, the Incarnates, have awakened special powers within them through their link with gods and demons from mythical lore.”


The fact that Incarnates concept could have been ripped from the pages of a Marvel comic is no mistake. You see, while its set-up sounds like the sort of geek pop culture we usually consume alongside a large tub of popcorn and super-size soda, its gameplay is based on a very niche sub-set of the fighting game genre. Heavily inspired by Gundam Extreme Vs.—a popular Japanese arcade and console title—Incarnates largely represents an entirely new experience for Western gamers. While the simple strategy might have been to introduce Gundam Extreme Vs. to a new audience, the smarter move, according to Baba, was to package its unique gameplay into a new IP that might be more appealing stateside. In other words, if players become hooked by the superhero-inspired yarn, they also might find themselves addicted to this fresh spin on fighting games.
