2 New Tales RPGs for PlayStation

“It’s one of the flagship titles in the Tales series” begins Kohei Rokugawa, director of the upcoming western version of Tales of Xillia 2. Sporting a proud smile and stroking a plush toy cat—more on that in a bit—Rokugawa isn’t referring to the sequel to last year’s popular PS3-exclusive JRPG, but Tales of Hearts R, the series stateside PS Vita debut. “Its gameplay hours are almost equal to that of a console Tales…around 40 hours,” he continues.


Of course, as anyone who’s slogged through a grind-heavy JRPG or repetitive Monster Hunter-wannabe on a portable platform will attest, length alone does not equal a console-quality experience. Thankfully, Hearts R appears to be packing as many fresh features and new story elements as it is gameplay hours. According to Rokugawa, one of the title’s most differentiating additions is its battle system. While Hearts R doesn’t entirely abandon the series’ famed Linear Motion Battle system, it significantly expands up on it. “Hearts R’s new Aerial Chase Motion Battle system is very different from Tales of Xillia and its sequel. It’s focused on aerial combat and juggling, so it allows users to make long and strong combos,” explains Rokugawa. Break attacks from previous entries return, but will now be complemented by new “Chase” mechanics, which allow players to continue combos in mid-air by rushing toward their targets.
