What Could Apple Want with Beats?

Yesterday news broke that Apple is close to completing a $3.2 billion deal to acquire Beats—a deal that has been unofficially confirmed by Dr. Dre himself—but what could the iPhone maker want from the company behind the incredibly popular Beats by Dre headphones?


Beats primarily offers two products and services: premium-priced headphones and a music streaming service. Two markets that Apple just happens to not be currently taking part in or is having a hard time competing in.


In Apple's store, you'll find the company's $29 EarPods and $79 in-ear headphones. Aside from that, the selection is filled with products from other manufacturers, including a set of exclusive headphones by none other than Beats. But in many cases, you're likely to find Beats-branded headphones strapped to people out on the street and on planes over rivals like Bose or Sennheiser. Audio quality aside, it's clear to see that company carries a brand-appeal that Apple just doesn't have in the headphone market. Apple may have done this by choice, but it's obvious that there is money to be made and popularity to gain in this particular product segment.
