With so many team books replete with hormone addled super teens and talking space trees, it's easy to forget just how good Brian Michael Bendis is at writing crime fiction. His latest ongoing series (number 530 to our estimation) returns the wordsmith to the genre he knows so well, the result an ambitious and expansive debut wherein the bad guys call the shots.
Set in a world much like our own, The United States of Murder Inc. posits an America where the Mafia didn't die out, it took over, carving out a territory all it's own in which it's members can rule with impunity. Valentine Gallo is one such member, a legacy following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. His whole life has led to joining the Family, yet once he does he realizes that things aren't what they seem and trust isn't easy to come by.
