The Following: Season 2 Review

Warning: Full spoilers for The Following's second season follow...


Still dishing out twists, turns, and multiple stab wounds, The Following did its absolute best to deliver unto us a fresh-feeling second season. One that tried its very best to not repeat the beats of Season 1. One that tried to keep Joe Carroll around as a vital force, reinventing his character and redefining his motives several times throughout its fifteen episodes.


But the basic blueprint of ineptitude remained the same, including the perpetual show skeleton of failed rescue attempts. Our heroes still came up short 95% of the time, but this time - this year - it couldn't all be chalked up to Joe being two or three steps ahead of them due to hidden acolytes. It was just Ryan Hardy choking like he normally does. Because, in the end, if Ryan Hardy didn't fail more than he succeeded, there'd be no show. And a series that needs those kind of losses in order to simply sustain itself becomes a chore.
