Finally, the Winchesters I've been missing all season! Both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki were in top form tonight, and while it's a fact Supernatural's coming back next season, Dean getting stabbed was painful to watch. I couldn't help but cry along with Sam, and I know the Winchesters are darn near invincible.
This was the best way for Sam to understand why Dean made the choice to save him at the beginning of the season. It was hard, but he wouldn't have got it any other way. He'll undoubtedly be put in similar shoes as Dean as he tries to get him back next season.
There weren't many ways to end the season on an amazing note that does something new for the series, but they nailed it by turning Dean into a demon. It's an interesting set-up on a few levels. The transformation will alter his relationships with everyone around him, and it's necessary. This is a change for the character, a change for Ackles, and his monster outlook will force him to interact with others in a fresh way. Fresh is a feeling Supernatural desperately needs, and this is a fine start.
