Once Upon a Time: "Kansas" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.


When we only saw Zelena's first origin story, I said she was unsympathetic. Now that we've seen more of her story, I have to take my judgment back. She was a fragile creature with her emotions balanced on the point of a knife. It wasn't surprising to see her give up her obsession with her sister in favor of a new and powerful position, but it was heartbreaking to know it wasn't meant for her. While I don't quite feel sorry for her, I do empathize with her more than I did before.


And hey, the effect with the Wicked Witch's skin turning back to normal was really well done.


Now whether we really needed to see Zelena's interactions with Glinda and the rest of the witches? Eh. It did explain the mysterious pendant and why it essentially holds all of Zelena's power. And as just mentioned, it makes viewers care a smidge more about the character. However, it seems like all of those pieces of information could have been conveyed in a few scenes rather than almost half the episode. Almost nothing about Dorothy or Glinda was engaging enough to make so much of them be worth the time.
