One can’t help but get a sense of déjà vu when reading New Avengers #18. Another incursion, another confrontation between Namor and Black Panther, somebody confronts Black Swan…one has to wonder, haven’t we been here before? It’s true that New Avengers is prone to repeating itself. Fortunately, between excellent art and writing, this issue is still pretty good.
New Avengers #18 plays out like a handful of previous issues of the series. Plot points feel like they’ve already been visited and conversations feel like they’ve already occurred. Honestly, how many times are Namor and Black Panther going to have the same talk about war between Wakanda and Atlantis? But fortunately, said plot points are pretty incredible even when repeated. Jonathan Hickman is juggling some huge ideas here and ideas like these tend to take some time to come to fruition. While the story doesn’t tread much new ground in this issue, it’s still pretty interesting.
