With JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle, developer CyberConnect2 has once again treated a beloved IP with not just respect, but enthusiasm, providing fans of the long-running manga with an experience they can properly geek out over. Strictly as a fighting game, All-Star Battle fares far better than the developer’s previous efforts. Though it’s not very fundamentally sound, I found myself enjoying it both in spite of, and because of the potential imbalances that sprung forth from its crazy mechanics.
As ever, developer CyberConnect2’s presentation is impeccable from the get-go, with a prismatically-colored intro movie that establishes JoJo’s tone of infectious energy. The best part is that all the clips that look like cutscenes are actually just victory animations, or in-match footage. It looks every bit as great once the action starts, which says a lot about how well the aesthetic from the manga has been realized.
