Debuting Thursday night, FOX's new cop drama kicks of its run with a pilot that’s decent, but its reliance on familiar tropes and inability to effectively build the relationships of its main characters hurt the overall product.
Gang Related’s premise will be familiar to fans of Infernal Affairs/The Departed: Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez) is a member of the Gang Task Force (GTF) on the Los Angeles PD, placed there by his father figure and mentor Javier Acosta (Cliff Curtis), the leader of a powerful LA gang called Los Angelicos. The premise of the pilot, and presumably the series to follow, is Ryan’s struggle between loyalty for the crime family that raised him and his responsibility as a cop.
