Cold in July Review

Cold in July feels like three different movies in one, but here’s the strange part: it absolutely works. Part suspense-thriller, part noir, and part revenge-action, Cold in July manages to achieve what few films can by shaping one narrative full of twists and turns into a subversive genre flick that is as hardboiled as it is well-constructed.


Set in 1989, Cold in July stars Michael C. Hall as Richard Dane, an average Texan going about his business in life, caring for his wife and young son, when an intruder breaks into their home. Dane uses his pistol to take the criminal down, is hailed as a hero by his small town and local police, but the guilt of taking a life – despite the intruder’s intention to do harm – looms. When the father of the dead criminal, a low-life named Russel (Sam Shepard), starts threatening Dane and his family, he grows paranoid and eventually fumbles into a criminal conspiracy that he’s not equipped to handle. And that’s just the first thirty minutes or so.
