Angelina Jolie Discusses Her Love For Maleficent

Nestled within the continuing trend of re-imagining fairy stories (Snow White and The Huntsman, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Kenneth Brannagh’s forthcoming Cinderella), Maleficent puts a new spin on the Sleeping Beauty tale known by most from Disney’s 1959 animated version.


Robert Stromberg (in his feature debut) directs a cast including Sam Riley (On The Road) and Elle Fanning (Super 8), headed up by 21st century screen icon Angelina Jolie. We joined it on shoot day 57 of 84, way back in August 2012, on a production that took up six stages of Pinewood Studios.


On the day we were granted access to impressive sets including a whimsical forest (modelled on the original Disney scene where Aurora meets Prince Philip), a thatched woodland cabin complete with shabby chic interior, child-like drawings and dolls made from twigs, and a dust-covered great hall with gothic flourishes and 23ft high walls.
