Superior Spider-Man #31 Review

Dan Slott has taken Spider-Man on quite the wild ride over the past 18 months. We've seen Otto Octavius take control of Peter Parker's body, declare himself the Superior Spider-Man, rebuild Peter's life from the ground up, and watch it all come crashing down as the Green Goblin resurfaced. That long, epic saga finally comes to an end in Superior Spider-man #31. Unfortunately, this issue doesn't reach the heights of issue #30, but it still offers a satisfying finale to "Goblin Nation" while also setting the stage for new Spider-Man comics to come in the months ahead.


What this finale issue accomplishes better than anything is reminding readers why Peter is truly the superior Spider-Man and why he needed to be back in the saddle. There are two moments in particular that left me grinning from ear to ear in the knowledge that Peter is back and all is right with the world. Dan Slott's writing hasn't always been the most subtle with this series, and often his collaborations with Christos Gage help iron out those rough elements. That seems to be the case here, and I loved the minimalist approach to the key scene where Green Goblin suddenly realizes he's no longer dealing with Otto Octavius. And repeatedly, there's comedic value in seeing Peter react in a dumbfounded way to the bizarre changes his life has taken with Otto in control.
