The first issue of The Dead Boy Detectives is, in a word, charming. Or if you'll allow me the luxury of two words: absolutely charming. While the characters were created by Neil Gaiman, Matt Wagner, and Malcom Jones III twenty-three years ago (in 1991 . . . feeling old yet?), one needn't be familiar with them and or their backstories to enjoy this new series from writer Toby Litt and artist Mark Buckingham.
The book is a visual marvel. Buckingham, Gary Erskine (inks), and Lee Loughbridge (colors) have worked together to create a vibrant, spooky, playful aesthetic that incorporates elements from different styles. There's a little Victorian mood lighting here, and a dash of surrealism there. For a book that combines characters from wildly disparate time periods, it's a savvy -- and highly effective -- stylistic choice.
