Yes, NBA Live is actually coming out this year. For real, this time. And yes, I got to play it (on Xbox One in 1080p, for what it’s worth).
Refreshingly, the developers at EA Tiburon are both humble and honest about their position in the marketplace, as well as the uphill battle they face both in mindshare and at the cash register. “Forget we tried to make a basketball game the last three years,” executive producer Sean O’Brien joked.
The good news for your graphics-philes is that NBA Live 14 looks a lot better in its real five-on-five mode than it did in its early trailer. Does it measure up to NBA 2K14? Not in the graphics department. But does it look good? Yeah, definitely. And the ESPN-integrated presentation is impressive, with Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy handling play-by-play and Jalen Rose offering custom weekly commentary based on what’s happening around the real-life league (and in the game – expect Rose to give shout-outs to people on the game’s leaderboards).
