Batman/Superman #5 Review

Well, this book went south pretty quickly. Greg Pak kicked off this team-up book in grand fashion, weaving a time and universe-bending epic that featured great art from the likes of Jae Lee and Ben Oliver. But the magic simply isn't there in this second storyline. Part of this may be die to the change in artist, but a more fundamental flaw seems to be that Pak just doesn't show the same grasp on the Batman/Superman dynamic in the present day that he did when the characters were fresh-faced rookies.


The problems with this story start right about the time Superman talks about "trolling" Batman. That is not a word I ever expected the Man of Steel to use, and I'm pretty sure I'll quit comics altogether if it happens again. To his credit, Pak is obviously trying to have fun with the characters here. It's a very necessary goal considering how joyless the New 52 is. But the humor just doesn't work very often here. Clark and Bruce have a very strange, juvenile relationship that doesn't suit either character's voice very well. They certainly don't read like adult heroes who have been fighting alongside one another for 5-6 years at this point.
