The Future of the Survival Horror Genre

Here's something fun you can do with your next ten minutes of procrastination time (preferably after the ten you've allocated to reading articles on IGN): go onto YouTube and type in any combination of the following keywords: 'Oculus Rift', 'scary', 'horror', 'funny', 'lol'. Alternatively, if you're some sort of high-flying exec with only five minutes to spare, just watch this video. It's my favourite.


If you did neither of those things, thanks for getting involved. But if you did, you'll have seen that searches like this throw up dozens and dozens of videos - mostly uploaded as comedy Let's Plays - showcasing the sort of horror pet projects that mostly amateur developers have been building for virtual reality, using the Oculus Rift developer kit. For the most part, they're not games in the way that we'd normally recognise them - there's no overarching plot driving the player forward nor any of the challenge-reward dynamic that traditionally characterises a game.
