Mike Judge fans rejoice, for the writer/director’s patented off-beat brand of humor is back in HBO’s new half-hour comedy, Silicon Valley. It’s more or less Workaholics with tech industry in-jokes, complete with ejaculation jokes within the first five minutes. Early on it’s a little too close for comfort, but thankfully as this first episode wears on Silicon Valley is able to establish its own identity with characters that are more sympathetic than they are caricatures.
The general premise surrounds a group of young programmers looking to make their name in Silicon Valley while working for a giant tech company that seems to throw money and anything it sees and usually comes out on top. “Minimum Viable Product” focuses on Richard (Thomas Middleditch), who finds himself in a predicament when an algorithm he’s developed becomes a hot commodity.
