At this point, we all know what to expect from these low budget monster movies. We expect terrible CGI concoctions, scripts laced with clichés, questionable performances, and enormous leaps in logic. That’s part of what gives them their appeal; the “so bad it’s good” effect. Unfortunately, Poseidon Rex from director Mark L. Lester (Commando, Firestarter) fails to achieve even that. Instead, it’s just another painfully bland entry into a genre of movies that’s quickly losing its campy appeal.
Poseidon Rex is an aquatic version of a T-Rex, essentially, that begins terrorizing an island near Belize. Wrapped up in the disaster is wanted treasure hunter Jackson Slate (Brian Krause) and marine biologist Sarah (Annie McDaniels), along with vacationing couple Rod (Steven Helmkamp) and Jane (Candice Nunes), and diving guide Henry (Berne Velasquez). The action plays out as you’d expect, filled with pseudo-science and blatant rip-offs of the A-list films in the same vein, ranging from Jurassic Park to Alien. But in a movie like this, typically, that’s okay. It’s part of the appeal.
