Mark Waid and Lenil Yu’s original Marvel NOW! relaunch of Indestructible Hulk was a breath of fresh air for the not-so-jolly green giant. Waid did away with the overwrought “WOE IS HULK!” of old and sent him in a fun, fresh new direction that ended up being one of the most pleasant surprises of the first wave of Marvel NOW! titles. Unfortunately, while it’s far from a total failure, Hulk fails to recapture that spark.
Mark Bagley has done some excellent work in the past, but this isn't nearly the best we've seen from him. His young Banner is almost indistinguishable from his original Ultimate Peter Parker, and some subpar coloring work doesn’t help matters much. While Waid’s writing is as solid as usual, the story direction seems stilted. Change is necessary in comics, but the direction it seems he’ll be taking with Banner reads like a plot proposed by a mediocre issue of What If?. The dialogue that brings about that reveal is straight out of a soap opera, and not in a good way.
