Gaming for Good: The State of Video Game Charities

During the week of January 5th to January 12th, speedrunners at the annual Awesome Games Done Quick event raised over $1,000,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The marathon, streamed live on Twitch and organised by Speed Demos Archive, featured over 500 attendees and participants playing an eclectic selection of over 150 games from several eras, all in a blissful marriage of gaming cred and good cause.


Four savant-level Super Metroid players made a madcap dash to complete the game in a race as tight as Miss Aran's Zero Suit; digital pugilists indulged in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! blindfolded, and typically life-destroying Bethesda endeavours such as Skyrim saw their campaigns cleared in under an hour.
