All-New Ultimates shares little but the "Ultimates" name in common with the previous incarnations of the team. S.H.I.E.L.D. is gone, Captain America is dead, Thor is trapped in limbo, and Iron Man has shifted his attention to the Future Foundation. What this series really serves as is an ensemble spinoff of Brian Michael Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man run. This is the same team of misfit teen heroes that Bendis brought together in the final arc of Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man and continued exploring in the Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man mini-series. But considering how enjoyable that team proved in those stories, a spinoff is hardly a bad thing. Whether new creators Michael Fiffe and Amilcar Pinna can recapture the magic of those stories remains to be seen, however.
