Of all the tales told in Wolf Team and Namco’s long-running JRPG series, 2004’s Tales of Symphonia on the Nintendo GameCube is among the best. The 2008 follow-up, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World for the Wii, isn’t as fondly remembered, but hey, I’ll take it. Tales of Symphonia Chronicles brings both games together on the PlayStation 3 with a decent graphics upgrade, making it the best way to experience the original Symphonia’s still-great adventure and combat.
Chronicles is an HD port, not a remake, meaning not much has changed — a good thing for fans of the original Symphonia, which remains a great game. The graphics upgrade, however, is inconsistent. In Symphonia, detailed locations like Ossa Trail, Lake Umacy and the Fooji Mountains look gorgeous in HD. However, going out to the overworld field (which never looked all that great to begin with) is now jarring. The monster sprites are the same weird blobs they’ve always been, and edges and textures look their age. Considering the amount of time you can spend exploring in the field, and the many long, often-tedious walks from place to place, that’s disappointing. The few anime scenes are where the HD really stands out, and they are absolutely stunning.
