Brian Lindley, producer at PopCap Games, recently told GameSpot in an interview that Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is "not going to have any microtransactions at all at launch."
The current in-game currency system comes in the form of coins earned during gameplay. These coins are then redeemed for booster packs, similar to the model in other free-to-play games like Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. The booster packs in Garden Warfare, along with unlocking silly cosmetics, come with defensive and offensive items to increase the player's likelihood of winning in a match. The coin redemption system, along with many other elements of the game, were recently outlined in a preview by IGN.
