In Earth Defense Force 2025, you have to make sacrifices to have fun. For example: if you're willing to give up a decent frame rate, you get to explode dozens of bugs with a massive airstrike, all while blasting at the gooey pile of limbs and abdomens with an electric sniper rifle. It runs badly, and some of its mission design is tedious, but that constant over-the-top destruction and co-op with distinct classes make it hard to stay mad at.
As I played, red flags popped up right away. Dead enemies become impossibly stiff and bounce around the environment. Buildings crumble under the slightest weapons fire. A silly story is delivered through horrid voice acting. But knocking EDF for that stuff is like criticizing McDonald’s for its interior decorating – it’s missing the point. Shooting giant ants, spiders, robots, and other creatures with a vast and imaginative arsenal is where this game caught my attention. I wielded homing laser weapons, plasma cannons, powered hammers, and more in my war to save humanity. The weapons feel powerful, look great, and are plentiful enough that you can swap them out every few missions and always have something fun and new to use.
