Young actor John Boyega, the star of 2011’s Attack the Block, has been cast as iconic athlete Jesse Owens in an upcoming biopic titled Race.
The film will be directed by Stephen Hopkins, who directed Predator 2, Blown Away and The Ghost and the Darkness, as well as TV shows such as House of Lies. Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, who collaborated on the 2010 Halle Berry drama Frankie & Alice, wrote the script. Filming begins in Montreal and Berlin in May.
According to Variety, Race “will will focus on how Owens, the son of an Alabama sharecropper, shattered Adolf Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by winning a record four gold medals in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump and the 400-meter relay.”
