Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
When a show has to fill 22 hours of television in a year, some of those hours will inevitably be filler. For the most part this episode felt like just that, but it’s a testament to Sleepy Hollow’s ability to remain light on its feet that “For the Triumph of Evil” used tonight’s monster-of-the-week to fill in some blanks on Abbie’s past. Getting her to admit her part in her sister’s troubles (and, in the process, inspire Jenny to escape), the Sandman story acted as more than just a placeholder and added another dimension to our local cop.
I like that they’re quickly getting into Abbie’s history rather than trying to tease it out, and it seems that we should be getting a reunion/showdown between the sisters very soon. It feels like Jenny’s coiled to strike every time we see her, and Lyndie Greenwood (Nikita) has already made an impression in a few short scenes – her visit with Ichabod served as a funhouse mirror to his meeting Abbie for the first time. It’s also good to have a (possible) antagonist on the show that can speak English.
