In a recent presentation to investors, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explained why offering a month's free trial for Wii Fit U will benefit sales of both the game and the Wii U in the long run.
Any Wii owners that also own a Wii Balance Board can download a free trial of Wii Fit U if they upgrade to Nintendo's newest console. While some might question the tactic, considering Wii Sports and Wii Fit were two of last generation's best-selling games, the company has other plans.
"...Some investors and analysts may be wondering why we would ever distribute a game that is guaranteed to sell well free of charge," Iwata said during the briefing. "However, under the current circumstances in which Wii U has lost its launch-period momentum we find ourselves in a situation where it is difficult to turn the attention of those who do not actively engage with games to Wii U; we felt that it would be difficult to hope that advertising and releasing our games in a standard fashion would be sufficient to create enough buzz in society."
