"How badly did you have to break it to make it care about people so much?"
I. Love. Root. So. Hard.
And this episode - denoted with a "/" (or "Root Path") - was the Root-iest episode yet, picking up the story that was last seen in January's "Aletheia." Which means Samaritan, Decima, and Vigilance. The new Machine on the block, the group that desperately wants it for their own, and the group that wants no Machines anywhere ever.
And at the heart of it was Root being taught a dramatic lesson by The Machine about what her actual priorities should be. Because, up until now, she's felt that she's been acting on behalf of The Machine's own sense of self-preservation, when in fact The Machine's top mission is still saving people. And so when paired up with a man who she discovers she'd personally feel very guilty about letting become collateral damage (due to their own shared, happenstance past involving her old assassin-for-hire days), she found herself meticulously mazed toward a scenario where she had to choose between him and Decima getting their hands on Samaritan (well, a chip that could make Samaritan work).
