Thanks to the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel’s superhero series this week became the most successful ever franchise at the American box office, overtaking Harry Potter and beating out the likes of Batman, Bond and Star Wars in the process.

When Disney decided to turn their Pirates of the Caribbean ride into a movie, little was expected at the box office. Johnny Depp was known for quirky indie fare at the time, while few had heard of either Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley. But the combination of sharp comedy and swashbuckling action made the movie into a monster that spawned three equally successful – if not particularly good – sequels, with Dead Man’s Chest grossing a whopping $423.3m at the domestic box office. And predictably, there’s another one on the way, entitled Dead Men Tell No Tales.
