As one might expect from the title, "ARPANET" went further into a storyline bringing the Jennings into contact with the future, in the form of what will become the internet. it’s a tricky inclusion because you don’t want to be too cutesy with it, as far as the description of what it can do. For the most part, I think it was handled well, as Philip and fellow spy Charles heard the description of “an interstate highway system through which all information flows,” while not truly grasping what this meant.
Back in the early 1980s, everyone still saw the early 21st century as the time where we’d be leaping into flying cars and other much more visual, large examples of “future tech.” Instead, it’s almost all been about small or, in some ways, invisible technology, driven by the internet, so it’s pretty interesting to see The Americans, about people dealing with advanced technology (for the time), getting a glimpse at what’s truly to come.
