After a dozen deaths and minutes of failure, I finish Not a Hero’s first mission in a single 15-second run.
I’ve got a good grip on the 2D shooter’s three basic mechanics -- slide, shoot, and special. Sliding on the ground lets me kick through doors, knock enemies on their backs, and tuck into cover the instant stand I stop moving. Pop off a couple pistol shots while sliding, and Not a Hero starts feeling like Vanquish. The special items, meanwhile, let me do big damage with grenades or explosive shots that slaughter dudes behind cover.
It’s an uncomplicated series of mechanics that create an enormous range of possibility for skilled players. I am not one of those. Even still, as I gun for a quick completion time and a huge high score, Not a Hero makes me feel like the badass hero of a stylish action movie.
