Hotline Miami 2: What Do We Want From Sequels?

Before diving into this, I just want to give you all a brief disclaimer. I only played about 15 minutes of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number at PAX East. That’s obviously only scratching the surface. Like the original, I really dug it. But honestly, if you would’ve told me that what I played were levels from the original that I had just forgotten about, I would’ve believed you without hesitation.


Each mission I played began and ended in a peaceful, if not grimy, location. Of course, in between these brief moments of calm was the frantic, super tough, and ultra-violent gameplay that I fell for back in 2012. Each area still felt like a puzzle that relied on equal parts careful examination, quick twitch-based execution, and just a smidge of luck. So yes, at this juncture, Hotline Miami 2 is more Hotline Miami. Now, for all I know, the sequel might have some incredible new mechanics, twists, and design tricks that complete separate it from the game I fell for back in 2012. The question I pose here is -- does it need to?
