Antboy Review

Based on the Danish comic book of the same name, Antboy is a film that banks on its viewers knowing – and loving – the modern superhero film. Nearly beat-for-beat, it follows Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie. From the animated opening credits to the book-ending voice-over to using his powers for personal gain before learning what it means to be a hero, Antboy borrows heavily from the forerunner of modern superhero flicks.


Despite this, it manages to carve out its own identity. It acknowledges the world it’s aping; superheroes like Spider-Man, Superman, Thor, and yes, even Ant-Man, are acknowledged within the film’s world, which helps shift the tone from a Raimi Spidey clone to something along the lines of a Kick-Ass for kids.
