This news actually comes from actor Justin Long, who casually mentioned in an interview with Long Island Newsday that Johnny Depp was in Kevin Smith's upcoming modern-day monster movie, Tusk.
When asked about recent projects, Long brought up Tusk, throwing in "Johnny Depp is in that one."
Meanwhile, The Wrap speculates that Depp is probably playing the role of a French-Canadian inspector named Guy Lapointe.
Tusk stars Justin Long as a determined journalist who finds the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (played by Michael Parks), a worldwide adventurer with amazing tales and a curious penchant for walruses. Smith is directing from a script he wrote, which was born out of one of his popular SModcasts.
