One of the reasons I think Marvel’s films continue to go from strength to strength on the big screen is their willingness to embrace different genres. They’re cine-literate, and as a result make much more sense up there than a straightforward adaptation of the source material ever would. Adapt to survive, right?
We're seeing it more and more, too. Edgar Wright has already gone on record, saying that his take of Ant-Man will be, in part, a heist comedy. And I can't help but think that Daredevil will do well on television if it's ready to play with the conventions of legal dramas (god knows, there's enough of them).
Winter Soldier is the best example yet. Consciously tapping into the loose '70s genre of conspiracy thrillers, it makes a virtue of Cap's infallible morality – in a world where no-one can be trusted, it's nice to have someone that earnest.
