The Blacklist was dark for almost a month due to Olympic fever and in that time Lizzy went and got herself a cool past! Now, granted, for much of the season there's been a bookmark labeled "we'll get to this later, but it's cool" on Lizzy and why we should find her remotely interesting, but tonight was the first time that I actually did. What at first seemed to be Red putting her on the spot to improvise a story for Madeline turned out to be him revealing that he probably knows more about her than anyone, just as he's been saying all along. Even if she later claimed to be making up most (but not all) of the story, the fact that she finally has identifiable qualities beyond "I hope my husband's not upset that I'm working late" is cause for celebration. It was a step forward for the show in an episode that showed some growing pains as it tries to set the pieces for a more long-term story.
