Ray Donovan: “Bucky F**kn' Dent” Review

Warning: full spoilers for the episode follow.


“Bucky F**kn' Dent” confirmed some of our suspicions about Ray’s childhood – that he himself had suffered abuse at the hands of a trusted adult – but didn’t divulge much more about, was we assume is, his complex inner life. Having said that, the strength of the episode was the focus on the family, as is so often the case in this series.


I can’t say that anything truly revelatory occurred, most viewers had long-since assumed that Bunchy wasn’t the only one to have been violated in his youth, though there had been some question about the perpetrator. Had Mick crossed that line with either Ray or his sister Bridget? Ultimately, the realization that Ray’s emotional disconnect and savior complex arose from both his own abuse and his failure to protect Bunchy was satisfying, if not gasp-worthy.
