This Villains Month issue takes a look at the present-day Metallo and what he has been up to leading in to Forever Evil. We do get a bit of his origin, but a majority of this issue focuses on what it’s like to be a living weapon with emotional issues. The execution of the story is well-done, and sweet Christmas does it look amazing thanks to Steve Pugh’s art.
Pugh showed us his chops on the twisted horror of Animal Man, and here he brings a sense of terror to Metallo’s design. As the monstrous man machine marches along the bottom of the ocean, he looks scary as heck. And when he’s in the middle of a military firefight, he channels the badassery of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator. The best page, however, is when Pugh shows an aircraft explode and then we see its debris sink into the ocean depths. It’s an unsettling image given the age we live in, but at the same time you have to appreciate the craft that went into making it so effective.
