The Wake #4 Review

wake4 Tried and true horror tropes have run strong throughout each issue of The Wake so far, and this installment is no exception. Writer Scott Snyder has traded in genre conventions while making them feel, for the most part, new and exciting. In issue #4, a few of those tropes don't quite perform as successfully as they're intended, but Snyder and artist Sean Murphy still add a solid, enjoyable chapter to their saga.


The book's prologue takes us 100,000 years in the past, where two tribes meet in a brutal and bloody clash, one of which is armed with curiously modern weaponry. Snyder has been building a mythology across different time periods in every issue, interlacing snippets from a grander narrative within the framework of his main story. While The Wake is the kind of book that often leaves you with more questions than answers, it's strangely not as frustrating a storytelling strategy as it could be. This anachronistic prologue hints at a mythology of epic proportions. Without it, the primary plot line might not stand out entirely on its own.
