Just about every modern X-Men crossover follows a similar pattern. That pattern means that the entire first act is a generally slow-paced affair as various isolated parties are maneuvered together so that the larger conflict can begin in later acts. I had hoped early on that Battle of the Atom might ditch this trend for a change, but by now it's clear that isn't the case. The story finally seems to be heading somewhere after last week's plodding installment, but the fact that we're now at the midway point of the crossover and the larger conflict is only beginning to coalesce is a bit worrisome.
