Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Had news of the second season renewal for The Bridge been announced a few weeks ago – while the show was in the midst of all the David Tate histrionics - rather than this week, I’m not sure how I would have felt about it. After a promising first half the show jumped the rails by playing out its shockingly anemic serial killer storyline at the expense of everything else. But if this episode signals the direction the show is headed next year, I’m all for it.
The Bridge has always been at its best this first season during the quiet moments, as characters reveal themselves to one another in tiny increments. Thankfully, after three weeks of trying to maintain a fever pitch, “All About Eva” was a welcome breather. Written by Esta Spalding and Fernanda Coppel, the hour is almost exclusively filled with hushed, sometimes silent, scenes that are all the more powerful because of how reined-in the emotions are.
