As The Strain reaches the halfway point of this first season, “Occultation” finds things finally beginning to fall apart. A conveniently timed eclipse has the vampires out and about during work hours for the first time while Abraham and Eph are faced with the limitations about how much they can actually get done even with what they know. Like most of the episodes thus far, this hour has most of the characters off on their own, with only a few brief reunions.
Beginning with the first scene of Eichorst’s horrifying killing room, the hour keeps returning to people finding themselves very much on their own. This is the first episode where isolating the characters works in the show’s favor, adding to the sense of desperation that’s growing for everyone. Abraham has to face the unpleasant reality that he’s rusty at best and not up to the task at worst while barely escaping the vamps in the basement. When he resorts to blowing up the entire house it’s an acknowledgment that he can’t handle them on his own. He reaches a low point in the cab, asking if the driver will help him but just sounding like nothing more than a crazy person.
