Activision: 'Freedom to Fail' Helps Strengthen Call of Duty Games

Activision says that the Call of Duty franchise's recent switch to a three-year development cycle gives the developers more "freedom to fail," thereby encouraging innovation.


"That extra year of development time, particularly with the new consoles and the more powerful hardware, has really paid off thus far to iterate, innovate and try new things," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, speaking to Joystiq. "To find out which things didn't work and have the freedom to fail in the creative process, so what goes on the disc is the best ideas."


Earlier this year, we revealed that Sledgehammer Games would be developing Call of Duty this year. Previously, development of Call of Duty games had pingponged between Treyarch and Infinity Ward. Introducing the third studio means that the series can maintain its annual output while giving its developers more time to work on each title.
