After nearly 10 years and roughly 80 million units sold, Sony is discontinuing the PlayStation Portable, with shipments ending this month in Japan and later this year in Europe.
According to Time, Sony stopped sending PlayStation Portable shipments to North America in January and will now focus on the PlayStation Vita. In Japan, for example, Sony will offer Vita hardware and download discounts for PlayStation Portable owners. IGN has reached out to Sony about the possibility of similar discounts coming to North America and Europe.
Revealed in July 2003, the PlayStation Portable launched in Japan in late 2004 and in North America and Europe in early 2005. With five different iterations of the hardware, including the short-lived PSP GO, the PlayStation Portable was the first dedicated handheld gaming device from Sony and competed against the Nintendo DS last decade.
