In Sovereign #1, writer Chris Roberson and artist Paul Maybury kick off a multi-tiered epic fantasy in the vein of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Like that seminal work that spawned a wildly successful TV show and a renewed mainstream interest in the genre, Sovereign approaches world-building in a piecemeal fashion. We're given slices of a larger picture that are meant to add up to whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. While it's a solid idea, the scope of a single issue doesn't quite let the world of Sovereign take flight.
