"The Toll" was clever and managed to trick us on a few occasions. Here we were thinking Art was Two Days To Retirement, and he gets shot.
Despite the affected pieces of Justified this season, the opening very easily could've been - and wasn't. Art's perhaps final scene (oh come on, they couldn't, could they?) was delivered just mundane enough to open the episode and just surprising enough to be a catalyst for the ending. The sight of the blood and the acting of Amy Smart was just good enough to throw viewers off the trail for the fraction of a second it needed. Credit to director Jon Avnet, who definitely threw a few curveballs with quick cuts and action that was too fast to give us time to think.
