New Girl's latest episode started out promising, as the gang partook in their most alcohol-fueled game of True American yet. Indeed, it was probably one of the most entertaining cold opens we've seen this season, especially considering how into it everyone was. Heck, even Coach and Cece were up on the rules (which, even after all this time, I still don't completely understand). Sadly, from the moment everyone woke up with hangovers, "Mars Landing" took a steep, downhill turn into relationship tedium and unfunny antics.
Especially trying this week was Nick and Jess's incessant arguing. While the idea of a hungover couple having to go to a one-year-old's birthday party sounds like a potential comedy goldmine, the payoff here never came. Instead, we sat through one of the most pointless relationship quarrels we've seen between Nick and Jess (almost all of it taking place in their bedroom), as they hashed out their fundamental difference yet again... while also struggling to assemble a complicated children's toy. In regards to the toy, it seemed equally pointless having them put it together at all, as any normal person would just wrap the present still inside the box (which Nick did at least point out about two thirds of the way through the episode).
